Mahalia Jackson, a gospel singer and civil rights activist, was born in New Orleans Louisiana. Jackson was known for her strong soulful voice and the song “Move On Up A Little Higher”.
A little known fact about Mahalia was her role in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have A Dream” speech.
Weeks prior to the March on Washington. Mahalia sung at a church where King preached a word about a dream he had. Mahalia was able to witness the Dream speech before it was heard around the world.
King had an entirely different speech planned for The March on Washington. However, because of the request of Mahalia Jackson standing behind him saying tell them about the dream Martin, everyone had the opportunity to hear The Dream speech at the right place and the perfect time.
